The more things change...
My mother used to say: "Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose" meaning "the more things change, the more they stay the same." She was quoting a 19th century French novelist, journalist, and critic named Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Karr, who was known for his political satire and wit.
The Stoics and the Buddhists refer to the same thing: impermanence.
Our bodies decay, lands erode, lakes silt up, but at the core we are the same.
When I return to places where I used to live, I notice the changes: the new roads and buildings. These places still feel the same though.
They've changed, but they are the same.
